The mural for Rudimental‘s album cover is probably as well known as the group’s music. But what people who aren’t resident in this little corner of London might not know is it is a real artwork on the wall next to the Eastern Curve Garden on Dalston Lane.
Painted in 1985 by Ray Walker to commemorate the 1983 Hackney Peace Carnival, to the casual passer-by it looks like a party in full swing, full of the people of different ages, races and backgrounds you’ll bump into around Hackney at any time. But a close look and you’ll see the image’s important anti-nuclear weapon message.
Even though it’s been up there on that wall longer than I’ve been alive, the mural is still in great condition, and even the pointless graffiti on the bottom doesn’t do too much to obscure the view thanks to its massive size, standing three storeys high. Even though the area is undergoing massive change, hopefully the mural will stay in its place and gets the preservation it deserves.
